A Counselor's Role

School counselors create and implement school counseling programs that help in the three main areas of success: academic, career, and social/emotional development. In using the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) standards and ethics, counselors follow four sections to apply our program: define, deliver, manage, and assess.

School counselors work in core curriculum areas, individual student planning, responsive activities, and indirect services as well as advocacy and administration where needed. For more information about the role of a school counselor, please visit the ASCA website at www.schoolcounselor.org.

Academic

A counselor's focus in the academic realm is not to teach the student but instead to provide them with the skills to learn effectively. These include time management, organizational and study skills, and confidence in the process of learning.

Career

Depending on the grade level(s) served, how a school counselor works in this area changes. For high school students, there is post-secondary planning with talk of furthering their education or beginning a career. However, for elementary students, the focus becomes connecting passions to future jobs and sparking those interests.

Social/Emotional

Social and emotional development in crucial for students in any grade. In elementary school, counselors create and deliver classroom lessons for students on a monthly basis while also conducting individual and group sessions, conflict resolution and remediation, and check ins/outs.
